Leland Someone was sweeping the sidewalk there in the early morning. The smell of garbage floated over the street from the trashcans clustered in a row along the curb. The first guest knocked on the door and said hello to the lady of the house. She did not know him. He handed her a package and walked in. The family was still sleeping; the coffee had just begun to simmer on the stove. The lady of the house held the package in hands still damp from washing last night's dishes. She set it on the kitchen table, then put some food out for the cats playing on the patio in back. The doorbell rang again. The woman wound through the still disorderly rooms, where the first light of day was only just entering. -How are you this morning? -Well, I was wondering about that box... The new guest came into that house hardly tidy enough for company. He went directly to the dining room. The lady of the house didn't understand. She stood aside as new guests poured through the door, entering quickly, as if they were being followed. Each one paused briefly, greeting her as if they were old friends, then made a beeline for the dining room. She didn't recognize any of them. Now, the day streamed in the windows, took control of the rooms, and vanquished the last remnants of night. The woman slipped into one of the bedrooms. There, she had to squint, dazzled by the light. And that box... ? The house was old. Its solid walls, over a hundred odd years, had seen many get-togethers, but none as strange as today's. In some of the bedrooms, the family slugabeds were still hiding from the light, seeking that last, dark refuge under the covers.
