I. INTRODUCTION
According to comedian Jerry Seinfeld, the only thing Americans fear
more than death is being asked to speak in public.' While fear of public speaking is
at the top of the list,2 death is actually sixth.3 Today, many Americans fear the
process of dying more than death itself.4 Many believe that as they grow older,
they will be left destitute, sick, and alone.5 Those who do not fear growing old
alone, fear becoming a burden to family and friends.6 Their fears are not
unfounded. After all, Americans often hear about the escalating costs of health and
long-term care (LTC),7 the lack of affordable LTC insurance options,8 the
