             PREFERMENTS AND MEMORANDA.


    In Michaelmas Sittings, 1885, the Right Ion. Lord JUSTICE BAGGALLAY died.
    In the same Sittings, the Hon. Mr. Justice LoPEs was appointed Lord Justice of
Appeal.
    In Hilary Sittings, 1886, Mr. WILLIAM GRANTHAM, Q.C., was appointed a Judge
of the High Court of Justice, Queen's Bench Division, and was shortly afterwards
Knighted.
    In the same Sittings, Lord HALSBURY resigned the office of Lord High Chancellor.
    The Great Seal was delivered to Sir FARRER HERSCHELL, Q.C., who was raised to
the peerage of the United Kingdom, by the title of Baron HERSCHELL, of the City of
Durham.
    In the same Sittings, Sir RICHARD EVERARD WEBSTER, Q.C., resigned the office of
Her Majesty's Attorney-General, and was succeeded by Mr. CHARLES ARTHUR RUSSELL,
Q.C., who was shortly afterwards Knighted.
    In the same Sittings, Sir JOHN ELDON GoRST, Q.C., resigned the office of Her
Majesty's Solicitor-General, and was succeeded by Mr. HORACE DAVEY, Q.C., who was
shortly afterwards Knighted.
     In Easter Sittings, the Hon. Mr. Justice PEARSON died, and Mr. JAMES STIRLING
 was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division, and was
 shortly afterwards Knighted.
     In Trinity Sittings, 1886, the Right Hon. Lord HERSCEELL resigned the office of
 Lord High Chancellor.
     The Great Seal was delivered to the Right Hon. Lord HALSBURY.
     In the same Sittings Sir CHARLES ARTHUR RUSSELL, Q.C., resigned the office of
 Her Majesty's Attorney-General, and was succeeded by Sir RICHARD EVERARD WEB.

     In the same Sittings, Sir HORACE DAVEY, Q.C., resigned the office of Her Majesty's
 Solicitor-General, and was succeeded by EDWARD CLARKE, Q.C., who was shortly after-
 wards Knighted.
     In Michaelmas Sittings, 1885, Mr. WILLIAM SPEED, of the Middle Temple; Mr.
 BENJAMIN FRANCIS WILLIAMS, of the Middle Temple; Mr. GEORGE PITT-LEwIS, Of the
 Middle Temple; and Mr. CHARLES JOHN DARLING, of the Inner Temple, were appointed
 Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the Law.
     In Easter Sittings, 1886, Mr. WILLIAM LLOYD BIRKBECK, of the Inner Temple;
 Mr. JoN HORNE PAYNE, of the Inner Temple; Mr. JOHN EDGE, of the Middle Temple;
 Mr. FRANCIS WILLIAM MACLEAN, of the Inner Temple; Mr. CLEMENT HIGGINS, of the
 Inner Temple, and Mr. ALFRED COCK, of the Middle Temple, were appointed Her
 Majesty's Counsel learned in the Law.
