Really Necessary?

I. INTRODUCTION
Jose is not your typical law student. Although he has competitive
admission numbers, he has never met a lawyer. He is also the first in
his family to go to college.
Despite high admission numbers, Mary has been out of school for
ten years. She has not been exposed to rigorous test taking since 1995.
Both these law students need Academic Support to achieve suc-
cess in law school and in the legal profession. However, law schools
may be tempted to cut back on academic support programs, due to the
high admission numbers.
As this article will argue, this would be a catastrophic mistake.
Although the admission applications and admission index numbers
are increasing, non-traditional students and traditional students are
greatly benefited by academic support programs. This article will dis-
cuss the history of academic support programs, describe examples of
current academic support programs, and argue why these programs
are essential in law school, despite the increase in the admission appli-
cations and admission indexes.
II. HISTORY OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMS
Academic support programs are relatively new in American law
schools.2 During the 1960's, law schools added academic support pro-
