The purpose of the first Annual LatCrit Conference
was to form a regular scholarly venue for the discussion
of social and legal issues especially germane to Latina/os.
The major focus of the conference was to explore the
feasibility of a LatCrit legal studies - that is, the study of
a Latino Critical Race Theory that avoids the weaknesses
of, as Francisco Valdes notes, an essentializing failure to
elucidate the sometimes covert, always complex, but
nonetheless fundamental interdependence of sexism,
racism and homophobia in the construction and practice
of social and legal subordination by, within and between
various identity categories.'
An integral part of the conference was to explore
the possibility of a Latino pan-ethnicity in the endeavor to
establish a LatCrit format. This part of the conference
invited the participation of scholars from an
interdisciplinary perspective. My task was to explore two
areas addressed by the conference from a
Mexicano/Chicano2 perspective: (1) the relevance of Latino

to the Mexican-origin population in the U.S.; alternatively, I will specify
Mexican national or Chicano native-born.
