Sir George Hermann Lush
5 October 1912 - 5 April 2000
Supreme Court Judge, Chancellor of Monash University, Patron of ANZAPPL

In April 2000 Sir George Lush passed away. Sir
George was a generous and urbane man of
outstanding intellect and breadth. He was Patron
of ANZAPPL from its inception in 1979 and his
contribution to ANZAPPL will be much missed.
Sir George was educated at the University of
Melbourne where he won two exhibitions and
enjoyed much sporting success. He was awarded
the degree of Master of Laws, joined the
Victorian Bar in 1935. He volunteered for active
service in the Second World War and fought on
the front line in Palestine, where he was seriously
wounded, and in Papua New Guinea.
In 1943 he married Betty Wragg, herself a
scholar, in the sciences. Three daughters,
Margaret, Jennifer and Mary, survive him, as
does Lady Lush.
Sir George returned to the Bar in 1945 and
also assumed a lectureship in mercantile law. He
was appointed one of Her Majesty's Counsel in
1967, Chairman of the Bar Council between
1964 and 1966, Commissioner of the Overseas
Telecommunications Commission between 1961
and 1966 and President of the Medico-Legal
Society between 1962 and 1963.
Sir George was appointed to the Supreme
Court of Victoria in 1966, serving in that capacity
until 1983. He was one of Victoria's most distin-
guished judges, being regarded as adept in all
areas of the Supreme Court's jurisdiction. The
current Justice Harper of the Court has described
him as decisive, firm and courteous, with wit and

learning to match. Above all, he was impeccably
and obviously fair. In 1979 Sir George was
knighted in recognition for his services to the law.
Sir George also served as chairman of the
University of Melbourne's Ormond College
between 1981 and 1990 and as Chancellor of
Monash University between 1982 and 1992. He
will also be remembered for his role as chairman
of the Parliamentary Commission investigating
the conduct of the then High Court Justice,
Lionel Murphy. In 1988, Sir George was
appointed by the Queensland Parliament to
inquire into the conduct of Justice Vasta, then a
member of that state's Supreme Court.
To ANZAPPL Sir George was best known
for his unstinting support and kindness.
Together with Lady Lush, he attended two
decades of ANZAPPL's activities, frequently
opening ANZAPPL Congresses and always
encouraging the pursuit of ANZAPPL's cross-
disciplinary search for reconciliation amongst the
three disciplines. Latterly Sir George and Lady
Lush would attend the Myers Oration, always
charming those with whom they spoke, impress-
ing us with their wisdom and insight and encour-
aging the activities of ANZAPPL members.
Sir George's support in the fledgling days of
the organisation made a great difference to the
viability of ANZAPPL and more recently, always
added lustre and interest to ANZAPPL activities.
Even in very recent times, Sir George and Lady
Lush attended the Myers Oration, having played
