My business is called the Timberock Company. It is an interna-
tional trade/commercial relations firm marketing Soviet products to
corporations in the United States. I would like to trace my experience
in order to give you an idea of what is involved in the how to aspects
of trading in information and technology with the USSR.
In June and July of 1988, I visited the Soviet Union as an advance
trade representative for the mayor of San Diego. I also represented a
San Francisco based engineering company and a San Diego based
software business. The software business was interested iri exploring
new markets for its products in the publishing and manufacturing
industries that could be cleared for export. I made a number of calls
to Soviet trading enterprises, and one contact resulted in the business I
am in today. All my contacts came from research, primarily from the
United States Department of Commerce. I cannot say enough about
the importance of communication with the Department of Commerce.
They know detailed information about the Market, and their bi-
weekly magazine, Business America, is an excellent guide for products
and places to do business.
On behalf of the software company I represent, I met with repre-
sentatives of Electronorgtechnika, [hereinafter ELORG]. My primary
business expertise is in marketing to chief executive officers. ELORG,
up to this time, has been the principal Soviet trade organization trad-
ing in computer equipment and electronic components. After our dis-
cussions, I was asked if I would be interested in helping them find a
software distributor for Soviet products. I accepted the invitation and
