ABSTRACT: The genetic relationship between a couple whose newborn infant
disappeared from a hospital and an abandoned newborn baby was investigated using
restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Likelihood ratios for
different cases of matching of DNA profiles were derived. The proposed methods can
be applied more generally to other cases of alleged parenthood.

In May 1993, a newborn baby girl disappeared from a local hospital in
Hong Kong. Two days later, an abandoned baby of unknown identity was
found on a street. Because this baby resembled their older daughter, the
parents of the missing baby girl thought the abandoned infant was their
missing child. The Government Laboratory of Hong Kong performed DNA
profiling tests based on RFLPs at four single-locus variable number tandem
repeat (VNTR) using the probes MS1 (for the D1S7 locus), YNH24 (D2S44),
pH30 (D4S139) and TBQ7 (D10S28), in conjunction with the restriction
enzyme Hae III. DNA fragments found in each of the four probe systems in
