I. INTRODUCTION
The law on artificial insemination, summarized in an earlier vol-
ume of this journal,1 became effective in 1989. The year also saw the
beginning of the operation of the new rules on a modified form of
guardianship, termed trusteeship,2 which has replaced the prior de-
vice requiring a person to be declared legally incapable of managing his
or her own affairs. These changes have also been previously described.3
Another piece of legislation which entered into force during 1989 is the
law on recognition and enforcement of foreign child custody orders.
This law incorporates into Swedish law the rules found in the 1980
Council of Europe Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of De-
cisions Concerning Custody of Children and on the Restoration of Cus-
tody of Children, and the 1980 Hague Convention of Civil Aspects of
International Child Abduction.
Section II of this Article describes a number of the more impor-
tant legislative reforms of the Code on Marriage which came into effect
in 1988. Sections II, IV, and V discuss the contents of three different
legislative proposals which were published in 1989, namely, The Preg-
nant Woman and the Fetus: Two Individuals. In Vitro Diagnoses and
