Inspired by the remarkable works of Dr. Magnan, who
has already exhausted this subject, I have undertaken the
task of tracing the extent to which alcoholism in the pa-
rent is responsible for that psycho-pathology in the off-
spring which manifests itself in criminality.
Cognizant as the researches of Professor Joffroy and Dr.
Magnan have made us of the direct action of the alcoholic
poison upon the brain, it only remains for us to closely ex-
amine the clinical material in the asylums and prisons and
to trace the histories so as to develope the extent to which
the criminals we find there are indebted for their morbid
mental condition to the subjection of their parents to the
action of the alcoholic poison.
In selecting subjects for the demonstration of this start-
ing point in the evolution of criminality, it at once be-
comes apparent that, in order to avoid confusion or mis-
taken conclusions, it would be necessary to exclude from
consideration subjects whose mental condition make them
irresponsible for their acts. Those who have committed
crimes against society under the influences of impulses,
delirii, in all their varieties, conscious or unconscious (in
