ETHICS AND VALENTINES
BY LEONARD PACKEL, ESQ.
Mr. Packel is a professor of law at Villanova University Law
School, Villanova, Pennsylvania.
I'd like to begin by posing a problem. Let's assume that you
are counseling a young man of 16. He was brought to your
attention by his parents. You learned from them that he had
been arrested while in possession of a stolen auto. He had been
prosecuted as a juvenile and had admitted his guilt and was
now awaiting sentencing or, as it is called in juvenile law-
disposition. He had told his parents that he had been taking
amphetamines and that this, along with the company he had
been keeping with other youths who'used similar substances,
had led him into the crime with which he was charged. You
commence your work with the young man and learn from him
pretty much the same facts that the parents had given you. In
addition he says that his use was not heavy, that he had been
supporting it with his earnings from a part-time job, and that
now, as a result of this episode, he had become convinced that
neither his new friends nor the amphetamines were a positive
force in his life and, therefore, he had given up both of them.
You have met with him three times so far and feel that you are
making reasonable progress.
It is now 11:00 p.m. on a Friday night, and you receive a
call from the parents. Mother was cleaning his room this
