handle is hein.journals/juristcu55 and id is 842 raw text is: THE JURIST 55 (1995) 834-874 TRIALS IN GENERAL: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EASTERN AND LATIN CODES JOBE ABBASS, OFM CONV.* In presenting the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium [CCEO]) to the twenty-eighth Gen- eral Congregation of the Synod of Bishops on October 25, 1990, John Paul II indicated that the new Eastern code, together with the 1983 Code of Canon Law (Codex Iuris Canonici [CIC]) and the 1988 apos- tolic constitution on the Roman Curia Pastor bonus, formed one Corpus Iuris Canonici in the whole Church (Ecclesia universa). Con- sidering this Corpus, the pope urged that a proper and comparative study of both codes be promoted in Faculties of Canon Law.' The pope effectively repeated his call for such comparative studies when he addressed participants at an international symposium held at the Vati- can (April 19-24, 1993) to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the pro- mulgation of the Latin code. He stated: The knowledge of this entire Corpus, as I emphasized on Oc- tober 25, 1990, at the last Synod of Bishops, must be oppor- tunely promoted in priestly formation and, above all, in all the Faculties of Canon Law. Indeed, this knowledge cannot but enrich these studies and ensure that canonical science, under- taken at these Faculties, fully corresponds to the academic degrees which these Faculties confer.'2 The present article, then, is intended as one such comparative study of the norms in the two codes of the whole Church that govern trials in general.
