At the end of my life, I presume to restate my opinion on a question
which has occupied my thinking for many years, but which most people

WALTER E. WRIGHT, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at Clark University, is a
scholar specializing in classical German philosophy. He is the editor of Idealistic Studies,
has written extensively on Johann Gotlieb Fichte, and is the translator of numerous German
works, including, most recently, Manfred Riedel's Between Tradition and Revolution: The
Hegelian Transformation of Political Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 1984). Professor
Wright is the principal translator.
PATRICK G. DERR, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy and adjunct associate
professor of environment, technology and society at Clark University, is a scholar specializ-
ing in medical ethics and philosophy of science. He has written extensively on topics in
medical ethics, technological hazards management, and philosophy of science. Professor
Derr is the principal editor.
ROBERT SALOMON, M.D., professor (emeritus) of radiology at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School, received his M.D. (summa cum laude) from the Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe University of Frankfurt in 1925, where he attended lectures in
neurology and psychiatry by Professor Alfred Hoche. Among his many other interests, Dr.
Salomon is a student of classical languages and medical history. He has practiced medicine
in the United States since 1939.
