handle is hein.journals/juristcu68 and id is 416 raw text is: THE JURIST 68 (2008) 408-417 THEOLOGY OF THE RELATION OF THE BISHOP TO HIS DIOCESE IN THE CEREMONIAL OF BISHOPS LAURENT VILLEMIN* Piero Marini opened an article dedicated to the ecclesiology of the episcopate according to the Ceremonial of Bishops (CB) in the following manner: The Caeremoniale Episcoporum is without a doubt one of the best instances of the concrete application of the liturgical ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council with respect to the celebrations at which a bishop presides in his particular church, and especially in the cathedral, the place where the church assembles and manifests its identity.' The particular credibility of such an assessment proceeds from the fact that Monsignor Marini was the Master of liturgical celebrations of the Roman Pontiff. The content of the CB thus provides a measure of the re- ception of the Second Vatican Council in liturgical matters and, accord- ing to the adage lex orandi lex credendi, can also serve to examine what we celebrate and believe with respect to the relation of the bishop to his diocese. Thus there can be no denying the ecclesiological value of the CB. This study will first present a brief overview of the CB before drawing a few of the characteristic features of the relation of the bishop to his dio- cese as these are found in this liturgical book. 1. Brief overview of the CB It is fitting to start with a brief overview of the status and the contents of this document. The CB that is being used in this study is the 1998 French language adaptation of the Caeremoniale Episcoporum pub- lished in Rome in its editio typica in 1984.2 It follows and takes into ac- count the revisions of all the liturgical books willed by the Second Vati- can Council.
