                IN KHARVIV UNIVERSITY

In recent years the origin and development of legal education and
the science of law in Ukraine have attracted the attention of
Ukrainian and foreign scholars. The object of research is more
often becoming the activity of chairs of law - the base structural
subdivisions in institutions of higher education which are
responsible for the instructional and methods activities in one or
several generic specialties or disciplines and also carry on scientific
research activity in a determined orientation. The study of the
history of chairs represents the possibility to generate an
impression of the succession of scientific-pedagogical schools and
determine the factors for the further functioning thereof
Among the leading and the oldest chairs in the Law Faculty of
the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is the Chair of
International and European Law, which specializes in teaching and
scientific research in the field of international law and its history
and the training of future research and teaching personnel. Its pre-
history commences in 1805, when the Chair of Natural, Political,
and People's Law was created as part of the Division of Ethics and
Politics at the newly-formed Kharkiv University.' In those days
international law was called people's law or the law of peoples
