THE RANDOLPH W. THROWER SYMPOSIUM'
LAW & HUMAN GENETICS ON THE THRESHOLD
OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM
INTRODUCTION
Michael S. Yesley*
The intensive public and commercial efforts to sequence the human
genome reflect great optimism that genetic knowledge will lead to cures for
many diseases, but the potential uses of genetic technology also raise ethical,
legal and social issues. There are concerns that testing asymptomatic
individuals for genetic predispositions will result in loss of privacy and unfair
discrimination. There is also fear that genetic technology will be used for
inappropriate, even species-threatening, purposes. And there is a vigorous
debate about who, if anyone, should own genetic information.
Several papers on these issues were presented at the 1990 Randolph W.
Thrower Symposium on Genetics and the Law, and published in a landmark
issue of the Emory Law Journal.' Recently, participants in the 1990 Thrower
Symposium and other commentators gathered at the 2000 Randolph W.
Thrower Symposium to consider, or reconsider, issues related to Law and
Human Genetics on the Threshold of the New Millennium. The presentations
at the 2000 Thrower Symposium are included in this issue of the Journal.
t The Thrower Symposium is made possible by a gift from the family of Mr. Randolph W. Thrower, a
distinguished alumnus of the Emory University School of Law. Emory University School of Law hosted the
Symposium on February 17, 2000.
