With the unexpected death of Robert S. Marx, on September 6,
1960, all persons connected with the College of Law recognized
that a close associate and strong supporter had been wrenched
away. War hero, able judge, skilled lawyer, creative teacher and
benefactor, it will be long before his like comes upon our scene.
Robert S. Marx was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 28,
1889. His parents were William S. Marx and Rose Marx, nee
Lowenstein. At Walnut Hills High School, where he graduated
in the class of 1906, young Marx was a bright scholar and able
debater. Essays which he wrote during his high school days
evidence inquisitiveness about the social and economic problems
of the day and creativeness in the solution of them.
Robert S. Marx studied law at the University of Cincinnati
College of Law where he was graduated in 1909 with the LL.B.
degree. His student days were marked by high scholarship and
rugged participation in student activities, both intellectual and
physical. His scholastic record is among the highest to have been
achieved at the College of Law. He was a gifted debater and
during his period on the University's Interscholastic Debating
Team, the team achieved high success in competition with uni-
versities throughout the United States. His interest in debating
continued throughout his life and in his later years he contrib-
uted to the support of Xavier University's Invitational and Na-
tional Debating Tournament. He participated in various sports.
It is characteristic of his competitive spirit that in 1908, at the
position of tackle, he started and finished every football game.
He was elected Captain of the University's football team in 1908.
His interest in sports and physical fitness programs continued
throughout his life.
Robert S. Marx was admitted to the Bar of Ohio in 1910 and
became associated with the firm of Paxton, Warrington and Sea-
