Yet the increasingly challenging security environment has brought about recent drastic changes ofJa- pan national security policy under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. While maintaining its basic stance as a peace-loving na- tion, Japan is expected to play a more active role in regional security. Introduction I f there were a war that involved your country, would you be willing to fight for your country? This is the yes-or-no question posed in a public opinion poll by WIN/Gallup International conducted in late 2014 in Japan and other major countries. The result in Japan was start- ling, yet not surprising. Yes answers were a strong majority in coun- tries such as China (71%) and Russia (59%), but only 11% of Japanese answered yes. When I mentioned these results to a seasoned Turkish diplomat, his response was, I don't believe it. After all, we know the Japanese. They come around and unite when emergencies arise.
