Recruiting children in armed conflicts raises concerns about children's safety
and human rights. The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has
been using children as soldiers, endangering the wellbeing of these children and
destabilizing the security of countries individually and collectively. This paper
examines the case of Iraq in dealing with the issue of child soldiers. It investi-
gates Iraq's international obligations in protecting children from being involved
in armed conflict. It also evaluates the legal measures that Iraq has been taking
to deal with ex-child soldiers. During arrests, interrogations, and trials, this pa-
per investigates the authorities' commitment to respecting children's rights in ac-
cordance to both human rights law and the Iraqi Juvenile Act. Finally, this paper
emphasizes the importance of establishing rehabilitation programs to reengage
ex-child soldiers into the society. In addition to physically and psychologically
heal children, this step aims to prepare healthier generations and rebuild a safer
state which in turn enhance the security of the region as whole.
