The objective of this paper is to emphasize the complexity of the news production process, the convergence and divergence of blogging from traditional journalism, the relationship of citizens emerging as producers ofjournalism, the role ofjournalism in the new media landscape, and the growing influence of blogs on users. We seek to contribute to a wider understanding of contextual and cultural influences on the proliferation of news providers on the Internet, the nature of the challenges that alternative journalism presents to the mainstream, the value of participatory media production, the factual nature of news, and the social construction of news. Keywords: citizen journalism, Internet, new media, participatory communication 1. Introduction The purpose of this study is to examine journalistic values in news contexts, the rise of social media, the diversity of the global experience of new media, the relevance of the Internet and new media to everyday life, and the advent of the twenty-four-hour electronic news cycle. Scholarly research reveals strong correlations between epistemological limits of mainstream joumalism, the use of participatory communication for social change, the changing land- scape of cultural production, the nature of facilitating crowdsourced citizen journalism, and the rise of citizen-led media. The results of the current study converge with prior research on the role of the Internet in a democratic society, traditional joumalistic newsgathering practices, the news values of the main- stream media, emerging models of online news, and the dynamics of citizen journalism communities. 152
