Drug use among domestic
marijuana growers
BY RALPH A. WEISHEIT
Ralph Weisheit is on the faculty of the Department of Criminal
Justice Sciences at Illinois State University (401 Schroeder Hall,
Normal, IL 61761-6901). This paper is part of a larger study of
the social location of marijuana growing in the U.S.
The business of drugs in the United States has been the
subject of study for some time, particularly for heroin and
cocaine. Most research focuses on street-level dealing (e.g.,
Williams, 1989; Mieczkowski, 1986; Carpenter et al., 1988;
Fields, 1984, 1986), with a few studies describing upper-level
dealers (e.g., Adler, 1985; Mills, 1986). Street-level dealing is
generally studied within the context of urban poverty, while
studies of upper-level dealers focus on the cosmopolitan and
lucrative aspects of the business.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This paper was presented at the annual meeting of the
American Society of Criminology in Baltimore, MD, November 1990. This
study was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Justice (VIJ
