Analysis of Nexus between Redundancy and Industrial
Democracy in Labour Relations

David Tarh-Akong Eyongndi*

     Abstract
Redundancy is a labour situation in which there is
excess of man power more than the available work to
be done thereby constraining the employer to downsize
its workforce. Industrial democracy on the other hand
is a labour concept that advocates the active
involvement of workers in decision making in any
establishment where they are working particularly on
matters that will affect them such as redundancy,
promotion, reorganization, etc. This paper looks at the
     meaning   of redundancy  and  industrial democracy;
causes of redundancy, criteria for selecting redundant
staff, methods for selecting redundant staff and the
condition precedent to declaration of redundancy. it
examines the relationship between the two concepts
and argues that, there is a nexus between both
concepts and as such could not be strange bed fellows.
The paper finds that notwithstanding this nexus,
employers still fail to abide by the law in the
declaration of redundancy and recommends that, the
Labour Act should be amended with the effect that
where an employer fails to abide by the democratic
procedure laid down in the Act for declaration of
redundancy; such a redundancy should be declared
invalid by the court with punitive measures as a means
of ensuring security of employment and dissuading
employers from hiding under the guise of redundancy
     to terminate workers employment.
