Brinig The accessory dwelling unit (ADU) can potentially provide solutions to several social problems because the ADU enables elderly parents to live in their own homes yet remain within close reach of their children. It provides more affordable housing options to the elderly as well as makes it possible for the elderly's adult children to receive childcare, good advice, and love from their parents without the inconvenience of sharing their homes. In this Article, Professor Margaret Brinig, from both a legal and a public policy perspective, explores the potential of the ADU as a zoning device. The author also examines empirically the likely and actual effects of the ADU on grandparents and grandchildren. Margaret F. Brinig is the Fritz Duda Family Chair in Law at the University of Notre Dame Law School. She is a member of the American Law Institute and won the Dis- tinguished Professor Award at George Mason University.
