Air Express: A Service for All Reasons

Or, the TV adman's favorite, Fly By Night Airlines? Lawyers are calling them all, because just about every large and small over- night express carrier counts lawyers among its top 10 customer groups. In an industry that took in $2.5 billion last year, that means lawyers are spending a lot of money to make sure briefs, con- tracts and other legal documents arrive across town or across the country over- night. No one knows exactly how much lawyers spend on overnight service each year, but estimates range from $200 to $300 million. Overnight express services have AIR EXPRESS: A Service for All Reasons proved to be so valuable that few law- yers could operate without them. I had a case in district court that was in danger of being dismissed unless I could produce a particular witness, said Stephen LaGoy, a sole practitioner in West Chester, Pa. I had to get certain papers to an attorney in another state by the next day to be sure this witness would be available. The post office is practically next to my office, so I used express mail to send out these papers. They arrived the next day, and we got our witness. This was the kind of situa- tion where I would have paid a special courier almost any price to deliver our papers, but I got the job done for about $10. That's what I call a bargain.
