INTRODUCTION
The significance of the Anglo-American relations has altered over the decades.
The close wartime collaboration between the United Kingdom and the United
States was followed by a period of nearly twenty years in which this alliance became
central to British foreign and defence policy. The Anglo-American alliance was
viewed as the cornerstone of British position on the international arena, therefore
the successive governments invested vastly in diplomatic efforts of maintaining it.
The extensive ties between the UK and the U.S. were multi-dimensional and
involved governmental and non-governmental contacts.2 Although this relationship
was not consistently harmonious (despite the efforts of some of the British and
American establishments to devalue the special transatlantic relationship) the
