                            ABSTRACT

    Detroit is a city full of rich culture and community. This article tells
the story of how such a rich community became one of the poorest Black
cities in the nation, with one of the worst performing school districts in the
state of Michigan. It also discusses the initiatives taken at both the local



    ? Nana Berko was born and raised in Detroit, MI and attended Detroit Public
Schools. She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in
business management and worked in the private sector as an Operations and Finance
Manager before attending law school. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time
with her daughter.
