After serving as Editor-in-Chief of the University of Cincinnati Law
Review, Richard E. Speidel received his LL.M. degree from the Northwestern
University School of Law. He acted as a teaching associate at Northwestern
for a year before entering the United States Army Reserve JAG Corps, where
he attained the rank of Captain. From 1961 to 1977, he taught at the
University of Virginia School of Law. During that time he coauthored three
textbooks, including Commercial and Consumer Transactions: Teach-
ing Materials. Richard Speidel became dean of the Boston University School
of Law in 1977. He resigned his post in February, 1980, effective July 1,
1980, to return to teaching and writing.
A STUDENT TRIBUTE
In September, 1977, the class of 1980 at the Boston University School
of Law began studying contracts, property and other unfamiliar aspects of
the law. A few months earlier, Richard E. Speidel left the world of
teaching to assume the unfamiliar duties of Dean of the School of Law.
For the class of 1980, Dean Speidel is our Dean. We shared with him
three good years during which we, as students of the law, benefited from
his imagination and his dedication. Although not all of us had the good
fortune to know him personally, such contact was not necessary; we
always felt his humanity and his presence.
In appreciation and respect, the Editors of the Boston University Law
Review dedicate this issue to our Dean. We thank him for the spirit he
created at the School of Law during our years here and wish him success.
A FACULTY TRIBUTE
The decision of the Editors to dedicate this issue of the Law Review to
Dean Speidel simply, but fully, states as much as other members of the
School of Law community could write as a tribute to his deanship. They
chose, however, to offer me the opportunity to speak for the faculty and,
in so doing, to join with them in honoring a colleague and friend. Rarely
does any faculty speak with one voice, but perhaps this is such an occa-
sion. That itself made the Editors' invitation difficult to resist.
The years of Dick Speidel's deanship have been ones of change and
growth for the School of Law. New leadership and direction exist in the
Law Library and the Center for Law and Health Sciences; the Center for
Banking Law Studies was established; the research seminar offerings were
quadrupled; an upperclass writing requirement that challenges every
student to develop the capacity to research and analyze complex problems
was established; opportunities for students to work oh and publish in
scholarly journals were expanded; the Integrated Semester in Criminal
Trial Advocacy became a part of the curriculum; new combined degree
programs were developed; Faculty Forum and other cocurricular pro-
