INTRODUCTION


Forced labour is refers to situations in which persons are coerced to work through the use of

violence or intimidation, or by more subtle means such as manipulated debt, retention of
identity papers or threats of denunciation to immigration authorities. Slavery is the severe
exploitation of other people for personal or commercial gain. Slavery is all around us, but often
just out of sight. People can become entrapped making our clothes, serving our food, picking

our crops, working in factories, or working in houses as cooks, cleaners or nannies.

Forced labour is any work or service which people are forced to do against their will, under
threat of punishment. Almost all slavery practices contain some element of forced labour.


Forced or compulsory labour is all work or service which is exacted from any person under the
threat of a penalty and for which the person has not offered himself or herself voluntarily. It
affects millions of men, women  and children around the world. It is most often found in
industries with a lot of workers and little regulation. These include:


-      Agriculture and fishing

-      Domestic work


-      Construction, mining, quarrying and brick kilns

-      Manufacturing, processing and packaging

-      Prostitution and sexual exploitation


-      Market trading and illegal activities

Forced labour is the most common element of modern slavery. It is the most extreme form of
people exploitation. Although many people associate forced labour and slavery with physical
