CORIDEN* Introduction: The synod of bishops is a child born out of wedlock. As its fortieth birthday approaches, it is largely dysfunctional, refuses to work effec- tively, and is pleasing to almost no one. Such an unhappy development is not surprising, since the synod, like so many children, was born and reared in the midst of conflict. The unremitting struggle between the forces of papal monarchy and episcopal collegiality prevented its proper conception, normal growth, and healthy development. The synod today cries out for serious therapy and a radically revised lifestyle. The troubling origins and subsequent malfunctions of the synod of bishops have been examined by many experts, and these specialists have recommended a wide variety of treatments, from mere palliatives to total rehabilitation. This study will not repeat those many diagnostic investi- gations. Instead it will refer to some of them briefly, and then recommend a regimen of reform leading to a cure. Outline: 1. Background 2.
