Ben Margolis: A Lifetime of Contempt for Injustice and Oppression

handle is hein.journals/guild56 and id is 14 raw text is: JOHN McTERNAN BEN MARGOLIS: A LIFETIME OF CONTEMPT FOR INJUSTICE AND OPPRESSION Ben Margolis, a founding mem- ber of the National Lawyers Guild, died the evening of January 27, 1999, at his home near Portland, Oregon at the age of 88. He is sur- vived by his wife of 62 years, Valerie Margolis, and their three sons, Kenneth, Roger and Gregory. After admission to the Bar in 1933, Margolis practiced law in San Francisco with Gladstein, Grossman & Margolis, a firm that represented the Longshoreman and other CIO unions in Northern California. The firm defended Harry Bridges against the government's repeated unsuc- cessful efforts to deport and im- prison him because of his alleged Communist Party connections. In 1943, Margolis formed Katz, Gallagher & Margolis in Los An- geles, which represented virtually all of the CIO unions in Southern Ben Margolis is escorted out of a California until the nationwide anti- hearing before HUAC.
