PRODUCT   REVIEW

MACBOOK PRO

By  Jeffrey  Allen

   A t long last Apple recently
           came up  with a substan-
           tially improved MacBook
           Pro. I have been waiting
           for some time to upgrade
my aging laptops owing to the fact that
I prefer using Apple's laptops, and Apple
waited far too long, in my opinion, to
upgrade its laptop line. To be fair, Apple
did update its line several times, making
relatively minor hardware improvements
and, in the not too distant past, released
the MacBook. Although the MacBook
looks slick and travels well, it lacks the
power I want in a laptop. I think of it
more as an Internet appliance than a
work machine. That said, if all you want
is a lightweight travel computer to deal
with web browsing, e-mail, a bit of word
processing, and maybe some entertain-
ment, the MacBook might well prove the
best choice for you. It certainly costs less
than the MacBook Pro. Note also that
a recent update to the line provided a
boost to its power.
   If, on the other hand, you consider
yourself a power user, or need a faster,
more powerful machine for the work
you do, you will probably find the Mac-
Book a bit underpowered and want to
look at a more substantial machine, such
as the MacBook Pro.
   The MacBook Pro comes in two
sizes, 13 and 15. Other than the dis-
play sizes, the footprint, and the weight,
the machines have very comparable
specifications.
   Similarities include:
   *Color: Your choice of silver or
     space gray.
   * Display: Very bright (500 nits)
     LED-backlit   display with IPS
     technology; actual measurements:
     13.3 and 15.4 (diagonal).
   * Processor: Your choice of dual-
     core Intel Core 15 or Core 17.
   * Storage: 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB
     SSD (the 15 also has the option of

   a 2 TB SSD).
® Memory:   The 13 comes with 8
   GB but you can upgrade to 16 GB;
   the 15 comes with 16 GB.
* Hardware   interface: Both come
  with a full-size backlit keyboard,
  Force  Touch  trackpad, and  a
  Touch  Bar with integrated Touch
  ID sensor. Note there is also a 13
  model available without the Touch
  Bar and Touch ID sensor.
* Connectivity: Both sizes with the
  Touch Bar and Touch ID sensor
  come  with four Thunderbolt  3
  (USB-C) ports, two on each side.
  (The 13 without the Touch Bar
  only has two USB-C ports.)
* Wireless:   Both  come   with
   802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2
   technology.
*  Camera: Each  has a 720p Face-
  Time  HD  camera.
* Power:  Although  the 15 has a
  larger lithium-polymer battery
  (76 watt-hour on the 15 model
  vs. 49.2 watt-hour on  the 13
  model with Touch Bar and Touch
  ID), Apple claims substantially
  identical usable time per charge
  for the two laptops-up to ten
  hours for wireless web or iTunes
  movie playback. Both use USB-C

                                   -

     adapters (the 15 comes with an
     87W  adapter and the 13 with a
     61W  adapter).
   * Operating system: Both use the
     current Mac OS (currently Sierra).
   ® Accessibility: Both offer the same
     accessibility features: VoiceOver,
     zoom,  increase contrast, reduce
     motion, Sin and dictation, switch
     control, closed caption, and text
     to speech.
   * Included apps: Both have the same
     built-in apps: App Store, Calendar,
     Contacts, FaceTime, GarageBand,
     iBooks, iMovie, iTunes, Keynote,
     Mail, Maps,  Messages, Notes,
     Numbers,  Pages, Photo Booth,
     Photos, Preview, Reminders, Sa-
     fari, Siri, and Time Machine.
   Differences (other than those noted
above) include:
   ® Weight:  3.02 pounds  vs. 4.02
     pounds.
   ® Dimensions:   11.97 x 8.36 x
     0.59 vs. 13.75 x 9.48 x 0.61.
   * Graphics: The 13 comes with
     Intel Iris Graphics 640. The 15
     comes with a Radeon Pro 555 with
     2 GB of memory (upgradable to
     4 GB) and Intel Graphics 630.
   * Price: Final price depends on the
     configuration. Base price for the
