   CLAIMS,  TRANSMITTING A CERTIFIED COPY OF THE FINDINGS
   OF THE  COURT   IN THE  CASE   OF CHARLES FOSTER, RECEIVER
   OF THE   UNION   STEAMSHIP COMPANY OF BOSTON, IN THE
   COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS, AGAINST THE UNITED
   STATES.  CONGRESSIONAL CASE NO. 9418.


   JUNE 9, 1898.-Referred to the Committee on Claims and ordered to be printed.


                        COURT   OF  CLAIMS,  CLERK'S  OFFICE,
                                          Washington, June 8, 1898.
   SIR: Pursuant to the order of the court, I transmit herewith a certi-
 fied copy of the findings filed by the court in the aforesaid cause, which
 case was referred to this court by the resolution of the Senate of the
 United States under the act of March 3, 1887.

[Court of Claims. Congressional case No. 9418. (Decided June 6, 1898.) Charles Foster, as Receiver
  of the Union Steamship Company of Boston, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, v. The United
  States.]

  This  claim was transmitted to the court pursuant to the following
resolution of the Senate:
                             IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES,
                                                        May 21, 1896.
  Besolved, That the bill (S. 33) as amended entitled A bill for the relief of the legal
representatives of William H. Foster, of Boston, in the Commonwealth of Massa-
chusetts, receiver of the Union Steamship Company, together with all the papers
accompanying, be, and the same is hereby, referred to the Court of Claims in pursu-
ance of the provisions of the fourteenth section of the act entitled An act to
provide for the bringing of suits against the Government of the United States,
approved March third, eighteen hundred and eighty-seven. And the said court
shall proceed with the same in accordance with the provisions of such act and
report to the Senate in accordance therewith.

  'The case has been brought to a hearing on the merits, John W. But-
terfield, esq., appearing for the claimant, and the Attorney-General, by
Felix Brannigan, esq., his assistant, for the defense and interests of the
United States.
