                Mr. HALE presented the following
LETTER  PROM   THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY RELATIVE
  TO AN  ESTIMATED   DEFICIENCY   ON PAGE  7 OF H. R. 13, AND
  RECOMMENDING THAT THE SAME BE AMENDED.


                         TREASURY  DEPARTMENT,  May  3, 1897.
  SIR: I have the honor to invite the attention of the Senate Commit-
tee on Appropriations to an estimate of deficiency on page 7 of House
bill 13, making appropriations to supply deficiencies in the appro-
priations for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1897, and for prior years,
etc., for salaries and expenses of agents and surveyors, fees and
expenses of gaugers, salaries of storekeepers, and for miscellaneous
expenses, $10,000, and to request that said appropriation be amended
by inserting the words  for the fiscal year eighteen hundred and ninety-
six.
