handle is hein.trials/adfwa0001 and id is 1 raw text is: The following Petition was presented:

7b His Excellncy, the Governor of New Jersey.
Whereas Lewis Waldenberger, of the County of Atlantic,
was tried at the December Term of the Court of Oyer and
Terminer, held in and for the County of Atlantic and was
convicted of murder in the first degree, and sentenced to be
executed on the 28th of January next; and whereas we, the
undersigned, have entertained, and do now entertain, grave
doubts of his guilt, the wife of the said Lewis being an
abandoned woman, living in adultery with one John Zeller,
herself suspected of having committed the murder; and
whereas, from the circumstantial character of the evidence
against him, and the excellent charactcr he has hitherto
borne, we firmly believe that he may be innocent of the
crime charged against him: we earnestly request that your
excellency will grant to the said Lewis Waldenberger, now
under sentence of death, a respite till after the meeting of
the Court of Pardons, that his case may be fully laid before
the Court by his counsel, aud that ample justice may be
done to the said Lewis Waldenberger, who is a foreigner
in our country and a stranger to our laws.
And your petitioners ever pray, &c.
