Research is sparse on who targets whom in peer aggression. In this study, we Received 30 January 2020

while one-third of peer aggression could be attributed to friends (not best adolescence; relational
friends), and classmates/peers. Greater harm was experienced between best aggression
friends only when it involved relational aggression, such as spreading rumors
and being left out. Harm from aggression varied by world location and
number of different experiences of aggression, while gender and age differ-
ences were inconsistent. Intervention programs could take advantage of the
vital role that friends play as socializing agents during adolescence that focus
on the harmfulness of aggression undertaken in the guise of a joke.
Peer aggression is a pervasive experience in young people's lives, but little is known about whether the
relationship between aggressed and aggressor is related to the harm experienced. In this study we
sought to clarify the complex phenomenon of peer aggression by considering the level of harm
according to the relationship with the aggressor. (In this study we do not use the terms victim or
perpetrator because not all peer aggression is harmful. Some peer aggression can be playful and
harmless banter (Skrzypiec et al., 2019) and an individual becomes a victim when peer aggression is
intentionally harmful. Similarly, an aggressor may be termed a perpetrator when their aggression is
intended to harm.)
Our study focused on adolescent relationships. During adolescence a young person generally
interacts with a group of friends often characterized by a hierarchy (Pattiselanno et al., 2015) where
aggression may be used by some individuals to establish, maintain and influence the peer group
(Cillessen & Mayeux, 2007). Such goals or underlying motives are particularly strong in early
