Bishwa Nath Mukherjee

Dr. Bishwa Nath  Mukherjee is Joint
Director of Research, Council for Social
Development.  He did his PhD in
Psychological Statistics from the University
of North Carolina at Chap] Hill. USA.
lie served as Associate Professor of
Psychology, York University, Toronto,
during 1968-1971. He has directed several
research projects and also taught for
many  years at Indiana University, USA
and Nagpur  University. Dr Mukherjee is
author of two books and has so far
published over 75 scientific papers in
various internationally reputed professional
journals. Since joining the Council,
Dr  Mukherjee has organized courses in
Research Methodology  in Social Science
sponsored by the Indian Council of Social
Science Research. In addition to two large-
scale surveys in the field of family planning
and fertility, he has also completed
recently a field study on Status of Women
in India sponsored by the United Nations.
Currently he is involved in research
connected with the development of some
new  multivariate statistical techniques
useful for population analysis and
psychological scaling.

K. D. Gangrade

Dr. K. D. Gangrade  is teaching at the
Delhi School of Social Work, University
of Delhi, for more than two decades.
He  received his professional education
in Social Work at the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences, Bombay and University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.  Earlier
he earned his Ph.D. degree in Sociology
from the University of Delhi and his
post-graduate degree in Economics from
the University of Agra. He began his
teaching career at the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences in Bombay. He also
taught for some time at the University
of Manchester, in England. His other
activities included servicing as an expert
on United Nation bodies and helping
in the formulation of the proposals for
the Fifth Five Year Plan on Community
Development  and Panchayati Raj. He is


now  Chairman of the Review Committee
of Family and Child Welfare Training
Centres, Government of India. He has
also directed many seminars and
research studies and is a regular
contributor to newspapers, magazines
and journals. Currently he is also
working as the Director of Training
Programme  and Research as well as
Editor of National Service Journal for
the National Service Scheme. He is
directing the Evaluaton of the Youth
Against Famine Campaign.  He also
serves on the advisory boards of
Sociological Bulletin of Indian Sociological
Society and Social Change of Council for
Social Developmen.

His writings include Challenge and
Response  : A Study ofFamines in India,
Community  Organization in India and
Intergenerational Conflict in India.

R. P. Sinha

Dr. R. P. Sinha is a Senior Lecturer in
Political Economy in Glasgow University,
UK.  He specialises in World Agriculture
and agricultural development with
particular reference to China, India and
Japan. His book Food in India (D.U.P.,
1961) was one of the pioneering works in
long-term projections for a developing
country. As a visiting Professor, Dr.
Sinha has spent some time at Hitotsubashi
(Tokyo) and Nanzan  (Nagoya)
Universities in Japan. He visited China
in 1972 as a member of Scottish china
Association and was one of the few
Indians allowed into China since the
Sino-Indian War. Dr. Sinha is at present
in his capacity as a Consultant to the
FAO,  producing a major report on
World  Population and Food.
