Prodipto Roy

Dr  Roy  obtained his Bachelor of Science
degree in Agriculture from the Agricultural
Institute at Allahabad in 1946. He
obtained his Master's degree and
Doctorate degree from the Pennsylvania
State University in Rural Sociology with
a minor in Agricultural Economics.
He  started his teaching career at Allahabad
University in 1946; he has taught at the
Pennsylvania State University and
Washington  State University from 1957
to 1961. He has been the Director of
Sociology at the National Institute of
Community   Development, India, from
1961 to 1968. Since 1968 he has been
Director of Research at the Council for
Social Development.

He  is an author of a large number of
research articles and a number of books
dealing with agricultural innovation,
community  development and
communications. Among   his many
publications are : The Impact of
Communication  on Rural Development,
and Agricultural Innovation among
Indian Farmers.


In  addition to other research he is
doing, Dr  Roy is at present the
Technical  Director of Pilot Research
Project in Growth Centres sponsored
by  the Ministry of Community
Development   of the Government of
India and  the Ford Foundation.

Gerald  D Hursh

Dr  Hursh  is presently in India as the
UNICEF Regional Consultant for
Research, Evaluation, and Monitoring for
the  countries of the South Central Asia
Region.  During 1971-73, he was with the
Ford  Foundation  as Director of Data
Systems  for the Growth Centres
research-and-action project in planning
for integrated rural development.

Dr  Hursh  received his PhD in 1965 from
the University of Minnesota, School of
Journalism  and Mass Communication.  He
taught  communication courses at
Minnesota  as well as at Macalester
College and  Michigan State University.
He  also taught Sociology at the University
of Nigeria.

During  1962-65, as Director of Social
Issues Research, Inc, a private research
firm, he participated in many applied
social research studies. In the 1968 US
Presidential Campaign, he was Director
of Survey Research for the Democratic
National Committee  in Washington, DC.
In  1969-70, he was Director of Survey
Operations for CBS News, a division of
the Columbia Broadcasting System,
national television and radio network in
New  York  City. His numerous studies of
public affairs were later published in
book  form. In addition to many research
reports and monographs, Dr Hursh  is
co-author of Surrey Research
(North-western University Press, 1963) and
Generations Apart (CBS News, 1970).

TA  Koshy

Dr TA  Koshy  had his early education in
Travancore State (now part of Kerala).


He  graduated in Agriculture-from
Allahabad  University and taught for seven
years before proceeding to USA where
he  received MSc and PhD  degrees from
Ohio  State University. He returned to
India in 1949. Positions held by him
include, Head  of Biology and Extension
Departments   and Officiating Principal,
Allahabad  Agricultural Institute; Special
Officer (Social Education), Ministry of
Community   Development,  Government  of
India; Executive Director, Literacy House,
Lucknow;   Director, National Fundamental
Education  Centre which was later
converted into Directorate of Adult
Education, Ministry of Education and Social
Welfare, Government   of India. Since July
1972, Project Director, Non-formal
Education  Project, Council for Social
Development.



Bishwa  Nath Mukherjee

Dr  Bishwa Nath Mukherjee  is Joint
Director of Research, Council for Social
Development.  He did his PhD in
Psychological Statistics from the University
of North  Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
He  served as Associate Professor of
Psychology, York  University, Toronto,
during 1968-1971. He has directed several
research projects and also taught for
many  years at Indiana University, USA
and  Nagpur University. Dr Mukherjee is
author of two books and has so far
published over 70 scientific papers in
various internationally reputed professional
journals. Since joining the Council,
Dr  Mukherjee has organized courses in
Research Methodology  in Social Science
sponsored by the Indian Council of Social
Science Research. In addition to two large-
scale surveys in the field of family planning
and fertility, he has also completed
recently a field study on Status of Women
in India sponsored by the United Nations.
Currently he is involved in research
connected with the development of some
new multivariate statistical techniques
useful for population analysis and
psychological scaling.
