The Big Bear Republic and Its Wines

St. Paul advised Timothy to use a little wine for
the sake of your stomach and your frequent ail-
ments. Always oie to heed good advice, Chair
Norm Roberts has placed our Section's standard in
the Napa Valley for the November 2-3 meeting at
the Silverado Country Club and Resort. Much work
is to be done. But there also will be opportunities
to taste at some of the world's great wineries, to
brunch on the Napa Valley Wine Train, to relive
some of California's history, and to learn at the
Section's CLE program, Grapes of Wrath-A Good
or Bad Year for Employee Rights?, on Friday, No-
vember 2.
Peace and serenity reign in the view from the
Silverado Country Club across its golf course and
nearby vineyards toward mountains beyond. But
the valley has known excitements far greater than
a tennis ace, a golf whiff, or a lovely wine. At the
valley's head lies Calistoga with its petrified red-
wood forest and nearby old faithful geyser and
hot springs. These are reminders of a large volcanic
eruption at the valley's Mt. St. Helena three million
years ago, and of the inferno still lurking below.
On the way to or from San Francisco, a brief but
enjoyable detour takes you to Sonoma, west of the
Napa Valley. In 1846, during struggles with Mexico
for control of California, the Americans set up the
Republic of Sonoma under the bear flag - the Bear
Flag Republic. John Fremont was a principal fer-
menter of this brief but colorful moment in Cali-
fornia's history.
In the early I 870s a silver vein turned Silverado
City into a boom town of 1.500 persons, but soon
the silver and the miners were gone. By the spring
of 1880, the valley was again serene, attracting
Robert Louis Stevenson and his bride for a stay of
a few months in an abandoned bunkhouse.
We hope you will join the Section at the Silver-
ado Country Club. There is important business to
be done. The CLE program on Friday, November
2, %\ill address difficult areas confronted in our daily
law practices. Then, on Saturday, the Council will
meet in open session to consider the complex pro-
curement issues presented by the changing budget
and world situations. Your participation is needed.

Issue Highlights:

Stevenson Park. For the vigorous, a one-mile hike
leads to the old silver mine and an additional four-
mile climb to the mountaintop at 4,300 feet. The
view encompasses the Pacific Ocean. the Bay Area,
and, on a clear day, the Sierra Nevada mountains.
But whether you climb or not, rallying around the
standard in Napa Valley will provide an opportu-
nity for overviews of important legal issues, of mid-
dle California and its beauty, and of the
fermentation which is wine and the human lot more
generally. N
