Aims

This study aimed to detail the number of adolescent prisoners in England and
Wales who  have required transfer to psychiatric hospital over the last 10 years
in the context of large reductions in the number of adolescents in custody.The
reasons for these trends are discussed.


Background

The number   of adolescents detained in custody has been declining in recent
years (Youth Justice Board & Ministry of Justice, 2015) with the average num-
ber of under 18s in custody in 2000/01 of 2807 falling to an average of 1544
in 2012/2013. In January 2015 the number   of under 18s fell to 981; the first
time the population had fallen below a 1000 (Youth Justice Board & Ministry of
