EDITORIAL

From the Editorial Board of the Journal, I feel that it is time to update our
readers on certain changes to the Journal's editorial personnel and policy.
First, to deal with changes in personnel, it is with regret that two of our
Associate Editors, Simon Wilson and Keith Soothill, have decided to retire
from being actively involved in the Journal of Forensic Psychiatry and
Psychology. Simon, in addition to being an Associate Editor, was also the
Book Review Editor of the Journal for many years where his scholarship,
together with his maverick interests, enriched this area of the publication so
that he made the Book Review Section for many, a 'must read' section of the
Journal. Keith, as a sociologist, again brought a fresh impetus to the
publication and, although his reign as an Associate Editor was relatively
short-lived, his contribution to Forensic Mental Health in general through
his Editorship of the Handbook of Forensic Mental Health and his acting as
Chair of the National Forensic R & D Programme (now sadly disbanded)
has been very significant. Both will be sadly missed as active Editors and I
am very grateful for their endeavours.
We are fortunate, however, in being able to recruit three very able
replacements. First, Mary Whittle has replaced Simon as Book Review
Editor. Mary is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at the John Howard
Centre who, I understand, uses the classical literature to train and educate
higher trainees in forensic psychiatry. She clearly has the credentials to carry
on the very high standards set by Simon. I am also very pleased that Mark
Freestone has joined us as an Associate Editor. Mark trained as a social
anthropologist and has an especial interest in research methodology. Mark's
interest in the socio-cultural determinants of forensic services will be
especially valuable as will his expertise in qualitative research. Finally, I
would like to welcome Richard Whittington who has recently been
appointed to a Chair in Mental Health at University of Liverpool. He has
a background in both psychology and mental health nursing and has
published widely on psychological and social aspects of violence in both
institutional and community settings. As this is core business for much of
the practice in forensic mental health, Richard's expertise in this area,
together with his familiarity with research methodology, will prove to be
especially useful in evaluating papers submitted to the Journal.
Last, but certainly not least, I should mention that Lorna Viikna has
handed over the administrative baton to Ginette Taylor. Lorna assumed
administrative duties for the Journal during a time of considerable flux in
