                    ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Thomas   J. Bernard is Professor of Crime, Law, Justice and Sociology at
The Pennsylvania  State University. His work has focused on criminology
theory and juvenile justice. Recently he has written on criminal justice
theory and has edited several prisoner-authored manuscripts.

Donna   M.  Bishop is a Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at
Northeastern University.  She  has published extensively in matters of
juvenile justice policy and practice, including on the transfer of juveniles to
adult courts, juvenile detention reform, assessment and treatment of juvenile
offenders, and the role of race, gender, and place injustice decision-making.
Professor Bishop recently served as the editor of Justice Quarterly.

Melissa  W.  Burek   is an Assistant Professor in the  Criminal Justice
Program  at Bowling  Green State University. She  received her Ph.D. in
criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. Her research interests
include structural influences on crime (in particular welfare and crime),
rehabilitation of offenders, alcohol use on college campuses, and the impact
of the media and public policy on crime. She is currently the Book Review
Editor  for the Journal  of Crime  and  Justice and  Secretary for  the
Midwestern  Criminal Justice Association.

Jennifer M.  Calnon is a doctoral student in Crime, Law, and Justice at the
Pennsylvania  State University.   Her  research interests include patrol
officers' decision making, the role of race and gender in the criminal justice
system, and intimate partner violence. She is currently the project manager
for the Project on  Police Citizen Contacts with the Pennsylvania State
Police.

Francis  T. Cullen is Distinguished Research Professor of Criminal Justice
and  Sociology at the University of Cincinnati. His  most recent works
include  Combating Corporate Crime: Local Prosecutors at Work,
Criminological  Theory: Context  and Consequences,  and  Criminological
Theory: Past to Present-Essential Readings. His current research focuses
on  the impact  of social support on crime, the measurement   of sexual
victimization, public opinion about crime control, and rehabilitation as a
correctional policy. He is a past President of both the American Society of
Criminology  and the Academy  of Criminal Justice Sciences.
