LEGAL EAGLE: JUDGE ARCHIBALD T. LECESNE

Justices Jefferson Hughes, Jeannette T
Knoll (pro tempore), William J. Crain,
Jay B. McCallum, Piper D. Griffin, and
John M. Guidry are pausing to celebrate
and give honor to Black History Month.
The justices are dedicated to promoting
universal awareness and understand-
ing of the justice system. This is thefirst
offour special Black History Month is-
sues of De Novo, the newsletter of the
Law  Library of Louisiana, that will be
distributed statewide by the Louisiana
Supreme Court. This year's theme is Le-
galEagles, featuringAfricanAmerican
judges highly regardedfor their contri-
butions to the justice system. New Or-
leans-born Judge Archibald T LeCesne,
who  went on to have an outstanding
legal career in Chicago, isprofiled in this
issue.


A    rchibald         Thomas
LeCesne      was    born    in
New Orleans on Decem-
ber  4, 1907  to  Adrien  and
Adele Gaignard LeCesne.
LeCesne     and   his   eleven
siblings were  raised in New
Orleans's  Seventh   Ward,   a
neighborhood        populated
in  large part by  Creoles  of
color.  LeCesne earned a
B.A.  from  Xavier University
New   Orleans  in 1936  and  a
J.D.  from  Howard Univer-
sity School  of Law  in  1939.
LeCesne was a member of,
and   received  financial  as-
sistance  from,  the  Knights
of St. Peter Claver  to attend
Howard. The Knights of

fraternal  organization,  was
founded   in 1909, when   Af-
rican Americans  were  barred
from  joining the Knights  of
Columbus.

covered  he was  a  person  of
color, they  denied   his ad-
mission.   LeCesne     shared
his bar  review  study  mate-
