Foreword
The Twentieth Anniversary of
the Chinese Journal of
International Law
1. With this issue, the Chinese Journal oflnternationalLaw enters its twentieth
year of publication. We are delighted to note this milestone, and we thank the
authors, the readers, the reviewers, the editors, the assistants, as well as the
publisher and all the partners for their part in making this milestone possible.
2. We started our journey with the aim to become a general journal of in-
ternational law, unlimited in scope and viewpoint, while attempting to pre-
sent materials and viewpoints from and/or about China and other parts of
Asia, as well as the broader developing world at large. So become we have.
3. We also aimed, at the very beginning, to present views that are thought
provoking, even if not necessarily correct, and to promote lively debates on
all plausible points of view. We believe we have done reasonably well in this
regard. Our papers have been taken notice of in various forums, with some
visited over 30,000 times on line and some serving as important parts of de-
bate or points of departure for serious discussion many years later-15 years
in one instance-in serious journals. Of course we can always do better, as
was stated in the Foreword to the very first issue of the Journal: We shall try
our best to be true to this aspiration, and we appreciate the loftiness of our
goal and the heftiness of our task.
4. As the current situation in the world cries out for better play to be given
to international law, we are sure that all involved in the Journal are ready to
press ahead and make greater efforts to ensure the Journal's greater success in
the years to come.
