EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION

T his edition of Conflict Resolution Quarterly (CRQ) appeals to a range of
interests, from family mediation to training, to international and
environmental conflict resolution. Like the annual conference of the Asso-
ciation for Conflict Resolution (ACR), which has just concluded in
Atlanta, we see the skills and knowledge of neutrals and advocates applied
across an array of areas. Each article was chosen for its unique contribution
to the theory and practice of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and con-
flict resolution (CR).
In her contribution, Amanda Shea Hart examines the potential bene-
fits of including children in divorce mediations, in those cases where
domestic violence has previously occurred or been alleged. Her thesis raises
provocative questions for practitioners in North America and around the
world, some of whom do not allow direct participation of children in
mediation even in nonviolent cases. As jurisdictions struggle with issues of
fairness and safety, it is helpful to learn from the practices of other coun-
tries and jurisdictions.
Kirk Emerson, Patricia J. Orr, Dale L. Keyes, and Katherine
M. McKnight share their evaluation of fifty-two environmental conflict
resolution (ECR) processes in order to test and refine a framework for eval-
uation. Not only does their analysis point out important factors contribut-
ing to successful resolution and conflict engagement, they also further the
state of knowledge in the evaluation literature to help us be sure that our
scarce resources are going toward those efforts most likely to yield positive
and sustainable results.
The unique contribution of Susan Allen Nan, Daniel Druckman, and
Jana El Horr comes from their analysis of party participation in interna-
tional conflict and development of best practices for intervention in these
complicated cases. Their findings are of crucial importance to those seek-
ing to quell international and interethnic group violence.
Few studies of mediation training exist, and to my knowledge relatively
little is known about the practice of mediation coaching during training. All
mediators receive training, and most receive coaching during that training,
