The Political Philosophy of

the British Idealists'

Stamatoula Panagakou

British Idealism was the dominant philosophy in Britain and the entire English-
speaking world during the last decades of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th
century. Edward Caird (1835-1908), T. H. Green (1836-1882), F. H. Bradley
(1846-1924), William Wallace (1843-1897), John MacCunn (1846-1929), John
Watson (1847-1939), Bernard Bosanquet (1848-1923), Henry Jones (1852-
1922), D. G. Ritchie (1853-1903), J. H. Muirhead (1855-1940), R. B. Haldane
(1856-1928), Andrew Seth-Pringle Pattison (1856-1931), J. S. MacKenzie (1860-
1935), J. M. E. McTaggart (1866-1925), A. R. Lord (1880-1941), H. J. W. Hether-
ington (1888-1965), R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943) and Michael Oakeshott
(1901-1990) were some of the most famous exponents of the British Idealist
movement. The philosophical writings of the British Idealists do not represent a
monolithic set of doctrines; on the contrary, one can discern continuity, differen-
tiation and development within the British Idealist intellectual tradition.

The British Idealists introduced into Britain the philosophical discourse of German
Idealism, integrated many of its fundamental tenets and hermeneutic structures
into their own philosophical discourses and embarked on a constructive criticism
of its cardinal doctrines. They were also engaged in a fruitful dialogue with the
exponents of Italian and American Idealism, and with thinkers from different intel-
lectual traditions such as utilitarianism, realism and pragmatism. Most of the British
Idealists conceived of philosophy as inextricably related to practical life and, in
founding their socio-political theorisation on the coherence theory of truth, elab-
orated a system of thought that emphasised the logical interdependence between
socio-political organisation and the individual. They made original contributions to
logic, aesthetics, metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, philos-
ophy of history, philosophical psychology and social and political philosophy. A
thorough understanding of the political philosophy of the British Idealists presup-
poses some knowledge of the logical and metaphysical views that sustain the
philosophical foundations of their projects. The political philosophy of the British
Idealists is logically related to their broader philosophical schemes and applies the
conceptual and normative systems elaborated there.

Although the political philosophy of the British Idealists does not represent a
unified project, there are many fundamental points of agreement which provide
their political theorisation with a unique and distinctive character. First, they were
inspired by Greek classical thought (especially the work of Plato and Aristotle) and
by German Idealism. Second, they acknowledged (at least the most 'political' of
them) the important relation between theory and practice (between philosophical
reflection and its application to social and political issues). Third, they understood
politics, not as an isolated discipline, but as an area of thought and praxis that is
