                         EDITORIAL:
                 Studying British politics

                            THE EDITORS

This editorial is intended to introduce the British Journal of Politics and
International Relations (BJPIR) to its readers. The BJPIR is a new journal
established by the Political Studies Association after a competitive process
in which the Department of Political Science and International Studies at
The University of Birmingham was successful. It will take its place along-
side the already successful Political Studies and Politics. However, it will
have a strong identity of its own. It is not intended to be Political Studies 2.
Rather, the aim of the BJPIR is to deepen and broaden our understanding
of British politics. By deepening, we mean that, while we will welcome art-
icles on institutions, processes and policy-making in Britain, our intention
is to encourage work which locates such analysis within a theoretical, his-
torical and comparative perspective. By broadening, we mean that we also
wish to publish work which examines key questions in political theory,
comparative politics and international relations which have relevance to
those interested in the study of Britain; so, for example we are interested
in articles on British political philosophers or theorists or on theories or
theorists which have resonance for the study of Britain. As such, this is not
purely a journal covering British government; rather, the journal intends to
examine all aspects of 'Britishness' in its many political guises.
The second aim of the journal is a different, if related, one. The BJPIR
will review the contribution that British and European researchers have
made, and are making, to the development of political science more
