In Memory of Professor Hans Smit


       Volume  4 of the Yearbook on Arbitration and Mediation is dedicated to the memory of

Professor Hans Smit, long-time Columbia Law  School professor and pillar of the international

litigation and arbitration community. Professor Smit, was the father of fast-track arbitration

and, more recently, of consultative relationships between parties and the arbitrators. He founded

the American  Review of International Arbitration and, with Vrat Pechota, constructed the 8-

volume  work entitled, The Smit Guides to International Arbitration. He was an exceptional

man  who made  a remarkable and singular contribution to law teaching and the development of

arbitration.
