                Militant Protest and

                  Political Violence

           Under the Banner of Islam

Despite the predictions of Western intellectuals and their Third World
counterparts, traditional society and its central(premodern)values have
not passed,' but have instead proven to be remarkably resilient.
Secularization, while not without its numerous adherents, has not
devoured the phenomena of religious political parties and ideologies,
as one representative authority predicted it would.2 Indeed, if anything,
religionists threaten to devour the secularizers. Nowhere is this more
evident than in the contemporary Middle East, where groups and
movements inspired by Islam (or by Christianity or Judaism in some
cases) have become increasingly significant in virtually every country of
the region.
In the context of a global revitalization of religion, it is not surprising
to note that the Middle East, and the Arab world in particular, has not
been immune to a renewed interest in religion or at least religious
symbolism. Mass movements wearing the mantle of religion have
become increasingly active in the East and the West. While the cultural
settings are quite different, there are readily discernible similarities
