Editor's Note

The interdisciplinary approach to the study of the international
environment and armed forces and society requires a vigorous contribution
from psychology and psychiatry. Harold D. Lasswell's treatise on World
Politics and Personal Insecurity, published in 1935, was one of the pioneer
efforts. However, in recent years, writings by psychologists and psychia-
trists have not figured prominently in scholarly discussion of these
matters. Therefore, we are pleased to include in this issue, three papers
from the symposium on the Social Psychology of Military Service,
which was held in Chicago in April, 1975. These papers focus on the
impact of military organization and deal with the American experience.
The full set of papers from this conference will be published in 1976 under
the editorship of Nancy Goldman and David Segal.

publication. The flow of manuscripts and the interest in the journal have
exceeded the original expectations with which the Inter-University
Seminar undertook this enterprise. Our editorial policy is to emphasize an
interdisciplinary approach and the central goal is to be a truly interna-

direction and format nor the operating procedures are completely worked

issues.

manuscript review and development. No doubt the system of anonymous
referees is an appropriate one for an official organ sponsored by a
professional association, but as the journal of a more old-fashioned
learned society, Armed Forces and Society should have a more flexible
