AN INTERDISCIPLINARY JOURNAL

The founding of a new journal requires justification.
Moreover, the establishment of a new journal cannot be
justified solely because of the importance and gravity of the
issues to be explored, although the questions of war and peace,
militarism and the nuclear arms race are fundamental to
mankind and the world community.
The sponsors of this journal, the Executive Council of the
Inter-University Seminar, believe that there is need for a
scholarly medium which focuses on (a) an interdisciplinary and
(b) an international approach to the topics of armed forces and
society, war, revolution, arms control, and peace-keeping. The
journal will seek to reflect the emerging focus on military
institutions as objects of research and in their relation with
other sociopolitical phenomena.
Research on these topics has developed within a single
disciplinary framework and in the context of national perspec-
tives. There are, of course, limits to an interdisciplinary
approach but the present political science and sociological
emphasis is being more and more augmented by stronger
concern with contributions from related disciplines as, for
example, psychology, history, law and the like. International
research collaboration is a complex and difficult task in general
and on the topic of armed forces and society it is especially
fraught with risk. But hopefully the search for an effective
                                                          [3]
